    Complexity Metrics for Systems Development Methods and Techniques

    So many systems development methods have been introduced in the last decade that one can talk about a ¿methodology jungle¿. To aid the method developers and evaluators in fighting their way through this jungle, we propose a systematic approach for measuring properties of methods. We describe two sets of metrics which measure the complexity of single diagram techniques, and of complete systems development methods. The proposed metrics provide a relatively fast and simple way to analyse the descriptive capabilities of a technique or method. When accompanied with other selection criteria, the metrics can be used for estimating the relative complexity of a technique compared to others. To demonstrate the applicability of the metrics, we have applied them to 36 techniques and 11 methods

    It is the premise of this position paper that a combination of design research and action research can be very useful for studying high performance designs. However, there has been a separation between the two approaches. A growing body of literature is recognizing these cross fertilization possibilities between AR and DR. Researchers argue for similarity between the two (J\u27rvinen 2007; Lee 2007; Figueiredo and Cunha 2007) as well as caution against fusion (Iivari 2007). Others suggest a middle ground stating that in some situations and contexts, the two may be integrated (Cole et al. 2005; Sein et al. 2007)

    Detecting Political Bots on Twitter during the 2019 Finnish Parliamentary Election

    In recent years, the political discussion has been dominated by the impact of bots used for manipulating public opinion. A number of sources have reported a widespread presence of political bots in social media sites such as Twitter. Compared to other countries, the influence of bots in Finnish politics have received little attention from media and researchers. This study aims to investigate the influence of bots on Finnish political Twitter, based on a dataset consisting of the accounts following major Finnish politicians before the Finnish parliamentary election of 2019. To identify the bots, we extend the existing models with the use of user-level metadata and state-of-art classification models. The results support our model as a suitable instrument for detecting Twitter bots. We found that, albeit there is a huge amount of bot accounts following major Finnish politicians, it is unlikely resulting from foreign entities’ attempt to influence the Finnish parliamentary election

    The apparel industry has, like most other industries quickly started using the Internet to gain improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of operations and marketing. In this report we briefly overview the developments of electronic commerce in apparel industry. We try to develop a framework for choosing the right technology and development options based on the business model and business orientation chosen. We illustrate the framework by four case companies, which have adapted different basic strategies and business models. The cases include companies with traditional operations with also physical retail outlets, as well as companies operating only on the Internet. There are still a number of unresolved problems related both to consumer-oriented e-commerce in general and to apparel industry in particular. Nevertheless, consumers are increasingly using the Internet to do extensive amount of research on products and fashion trends before purchasing through any media, also making more and more online purchase

    Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) technologies are frequently adopted by organizations for safety training. Safety training in IVR engages and motivates employees to develop skills in how to manage hazardous situations. By employing IVR for safety training, organizations and employees can develop safety knowledge and increase their sustainability awareness. In this paper we develop design principles for sustainable fire safety training in IVR. The principles were developed through an Action Design Research (ADR) case. The paper demonstrates how ADR can be used to design individual training environments and how the method supports the development of more generic design principles for such environments. The design principles are subsequently proposed as: Design for Multimodal Risk Perception, Design for Empathetic Safety Cognition, Design for Formative Hazard Inspection, and Design for Comfort in Uncomfortable Decision Making

    Actor Positioning and Its Implications to Value Co-Creation in SaaS Ecosystems

    Research on platform ecosystems often takes a binary view of the ecosystem and its actors by dividing the actors belonging either to the core or the periphery of the platform. Platform ecosystems tend to be more nuanced, however, and contain a variety of groups of actors with different roles and interests. These different groups of actors seek to occupy and defend particular positions in the ecosystem that enable them to capture the maximum amount of value from the value co-creation occurring in the ecosystem. By studying SaaS ecosystems, this research maps the positions the different actors seek to occupy and the impact these have to the value creation processes and evolution of platform ecosystems. The results further highlight the preferred positions of the different actors and demonstrates how the interests of the actors are not always aligned but may also lead to value co-destruction instead of value co-creation

    This paper reports the findings of an in-depth case study of implementing Enterprise Resource Planning Systems (ERP) in a long-established multinational company within the telecommunication sector. The company streamlined its operations through an ambitious business process redesign initiative and introduced an ERP system. The study examines the emergence of the ERP system and the mangle of simultaneous changes to the system and to the company context, along with the intentions and actions of the individuals involved. The study seeks to understand the ERP implementation process, in particular, the link between the ERP implementation process and the underlying and often subtle influences within the context. By drawing on the case study the paper offers a theoretical conceptualization of triggers and consequences of the cycles of control and drift of ERP implementation
